We had been waiting for a good dump of snow for this weekend which unfortunately didn’t arrive, instead we were due to have a cloudy weekend with not much in the way of sunshine. A trip to the mountains was still on the cards, after all cloudy weather means less people.

Lenzerheide, getting there early was a good call. We got an early cable car up to Rothorn, enjoyed some perfectly prepared pistes, before heading towards Schwarzhorn and getting some tracked out powder right next to the piste. After a couple of runs we headed to meet some friends on the West side of the valley for a few runs before heading back to the Rothorn side and getting more powder near Weisshorn. The clouds kept on pushing up all day so by the end of the day we were dropping into very poor visibility, but with the promise of some powder turns above the clouds we kept on making heading back up for more. Despite not expecting much from the day it turned into another great day in the mountains.

Time for a ski tour. Some friends called me and invited me to join them on a tour to Firzstock near Wallensee in Eastern Switzerland. We met at 8:30 in the morning, prepared our skis with skins and started skiing up through the woods. Visibility was not great, especially once we broke out above the treeline and had no references for visual navigation. About 100 vertical metres below the summit we broke out of the cloud and had perfect blue skies. The views of the surrounding peaks were stunning. We spent a bit of time enjoying the sunshine and the view before getting some really nice powder turns on the way back down.

Just clearing the clouds on the way up.

Two views from the summit.

Another weekend proving its better to get out there and do it rather then stay in and complain about the weather.
