After the snowfall in Zurich last week, it was shaping up to be a great weekend skiing. Friday I left work early to get a session in at Flumserberg just to see if I could still stay upright. I felt pretty rusty but it was good to get out on the skis again. There was very little open on in Flumserberg, and the snow quality was pretty poor (mainly artificial snow) so it was time to find something better for Saturday.
On Saturday I went to Andermatt to check out Gemstock. They were reporting 150cm of snow on the upper slopes and it did not disappoint. The snow quality was great and there were very few people. Before lunch it was even possibly to find some not so tracked out sections of powder right next to the piste and under the lift. Going into deep snow I felt like I had never seen skis before. I fell over more times then I care to remember. I think its time to get another lesson to figure out this deep snow lark. The runs down from the top of Gemstock to the mid station and the valley were really nice on piste and allowed loads of possibilities to just nip off to the side and practice deep snow technique. It was a great second day of the season, blue skies, good friends, powder snow and the start of the 2009/10 ski season learning curve.
Sunday involved a trip to Davos/Klosters to ski the Parsenn area. I quite like this area when it isn’t crowded, and today it was pretty empty. Not all the lifts were open but there was more then enough to have a good fun day on. The weather forecast had been rain for Zurich and the surrounding areas but getting out to Graubünden as usual paid off and we had a great day on the slopes. It was really nice to be skiing on slopes that just a few months ago we were biking on.
Time to keep an eye on the weather forecast and start planning locations for next weekend.
